Wrestling 101 Featuring "Cowboy" Bill Watts
"Cowboy" Bill Watts was born William F. Watts May 5, 1939. Throughout his long wrestling career he used a "cowboy" gimmick even after he hung up the tights and became a promoter and executive.
The cowboy retired in 1993 but held many titles for several wrestling promotions. The following is a short list of some of the championships that he held and the company:
AWA United States Champion
NWA Florida Heavyweight Champion
NWA Southern Heavyweight Champion
NWA Gulf Coast Champion
NWA Texas Heavyweight Champion
WWWF United States Tag Team Champion w/ Gorilla Monsoon*
*WWWF=World Wide Wrestling Federation which is now the WWE
He used a no nonsense much like he did as a wrestler with his Mid-South Wrestling promotion that evolved into the UWF. It was purchased by the Jim Crocket Promotions which later sold his promotion to Ted Turner who owned WCW.
Bill Watts was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009
In March 2006, Watts released his autobiography The Cowboy and the Cross: The Bill Watts Story: Rebellion, Wrestling and Redemption.
I have read his autobiography and I would recommend it to any wrestling fan. It was a great read and I really enjoyed reading his story.
