Thoughts on WrestleMania 25 Main Events

cletus42o

With WrestleMania coming up pretty soon - about 3 months away - it's time to start talking about the card.

I asked the question of everyone here about which match you'd prefer to see headline WrestleMania 25.  The top results were:  Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker (with more than double the votes of the next one), Batista vs John Cena, Edge vs Jeff Hardy, The Undertaker vs Triple H, Edge vs Randy Orton, John Cena vs The Undertaker, Jeff Hardy vs John Cena, and Chris Jericho vs Edge.  (you can see the full results on the Poll History page)

Well, Batista vs John Cena is no longer a possibility.  Edge vs Jeff Hardy appears to be taking place at the Rumble.  That's two of the three most-voted matches that at the moment don't appear to be available for the biggest show of the year.

That leaves the top two matches as Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker and Triple H vs The Undertaker.  Interesting, considering these are the three performers who have been with WWE the longest.  (at least out of the main eventers)

And none of these men has a title belt!

Personally, I'd love to see Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker, one-on-one, at WrestleMania.  But what about tossing Triple H in the match, too?  Has Undertaker ever had to face more than one man at WrestleMania with his streak on the line?  The only way making it a three-way would make sense is if Undertaker turned heel, at least as far as I can see, but it does take care of getting Triple H into a high-profile match AND lets us get the Houston WrestleMania rematch in a way of HHH/Undertaker.

But what about the two main titles?

We've got these men available for the two main events:

Raw: Chris Jericho, CM Punk, John Cena, Randy Orton, and Shawn Michaels

Smackdown: Big Show, Edge, Jeff Hardy, Triple H, and The Undertaker

(some may be upset I'm not including anyone from ECW, notably Matt Hardy - I don't see him quite ready for the WM main event, with the only exception potentially being a match against his brother.  Next year, perhaps!)

It looks like we're headed for John Cena vs Randy Orton on the Raw side.  Haven't we been through this before, and not that long ago?  Didn't Orton kick Cena's dad in the head on Raw?  That wasn't really a short feud.  They were both in last year's Raw main event, too!  Is this REALLY a WM-caliber match right now?  I get that Batista's injury is problematic, since they were likely headed to Batista vs Cena, but I really hope they don't go with Orton vs Cena.

If we forget all the talk about HBK/HHH/Undertaker, then I'd say Cena vs Undertaker would be a much better match to headline the show.  Outside of that, I'd be more excited about Cena vs CM Punk or Cena vs Jeff Hardy.  Of course, the problem really boils down to me not being THAT excited about Cena in the main event in the first place, and I think that brings the options down so much that I'd really rather see him lose the title before WM.

So I'm kind of stuck on the Raw main event.  I hope WWE has something good in mind.

Over on Smackdown, there's really not a match they couldn't put together I wouldn't be excited about, except for match-ups we've seen recently.

I would be happy to see Jeff Hardy face off against just about any of the choices, except for Edge and Triple H.  So I think Smackdown should be golden for WM.  Jeff Hardy vs Chris Jericho, Jeff Hardy vs Randy Orton (giving Jeff that win over Randy with the title at stake he didn't get last year), Jeff Hardy vs CM Punk..  these are all matches that I think would be exciting to see.

And I guess one of those other big rumors is that Steve Austin will have his final match at the show.  Not sure who that would be with (don't see The Rock coming back for it).

I'll probably check back in with some more thoughts on how WM is shaping up, once WWE starts giving a few more clues.

Hoping Austin faces either Cena or Orton, both would be huge and big time.

WM22 was Big Time.

SO MUCH LARGER THAN LIFE

I could see Austin/HBK vs JBL/someone. Austin's attitude is exactly what HBK needs to take on his boss, so it would make sense. I'd definitely prefer HBK in a singles match (and with Undertaker), but it'd work and would be a bit easier for Austin to do a tag match.

If we're gonna go with the whole boss/employer thing with a tag match like Austin/HBK vs JBL/??? then the only way person I can see filling in that ??? as JBL's partner would be Mr.Mcmahon. He's coming back to make his first TV appearance since the million dollar giveaway "accident" and I bet he's still in shape to compete so why not? Not to mention that they could give some kind of storyline to it that if HBK and Austin were to win then HBK would win the right to end is employment wit JBL and get some kind of new contract from Vince giving him all the money he could ever need to support his family. It'd pretty much be a sure thing that Austin/HBK would win anyways as the whole former big star shows up for one night only usually goes with Wrestlemania anyway so just by having HBK team with Austin would make people think they're gonna win anyway. I'd still rather see HBK/Taker though but the more I think about it the more I think that the Taker match should go to some up and coming star that WWE could but a lot of stock in the future that could give Taker a great match so that way if it is his last and the decision is made to end the streak then it goes to someone who can take that huge rub and become a big star rather then giving it to someone who might not be around too much longer himself like HBK although I'm sure it'd be a good match.

So what about this...

JBL picks up the title at the rumble, with HBK's help (I see this happening as HBK breaks the ref's count after an FU from Cena). JBL goes on to WM to defend his championship at WM against either Cena or the rumble winner (again with HBK's help).

Previous to this, however, HBK has picked up the win in the Money In The Bank match, which is cashed in immediately following the WM 'Main Event'. This puts a fitting end to the JBL/HBK storyline, but still allows HBK to retain the 'Mr WrestleMania/Showstopper' nicknames, and give him a final title run before his imminent retirement...

Regards 'Taker, I can't see the WWE taking his streak off him now (he wouldn't have built it up this long to lose it to an 'up and coming'), but a match against Stone Cold would be legendary for WM's 25th anniversary, and would cement 'Takers Legend status!
