Is WWE Rushing to Chris Jericho vs The Undertaker too fast?

WWE added Chris Jericho to the World Heavyweight Championship match at Survivor Series this past week on Smackdown.  This means Chris Jericho and The Undertaker will be facing off in a championship match at one of the big four PPVs.

Sure, the entire scenario leading to this match does make some sense:

Big Show turning on his teammates at Bragging Rights as part of a deal with Teddy Long to earn a title match against The Undertaker (although what doesn't make sense here is that Teddy Long is giving Raw the opportunity to be home to both world titles for the victory at Bragging Rights that ultimately means nothing to the brand) and Chris Jericho's jealousy leading to him asking to be added to the match (and I do applaud that he had to earn the spot - though I don't see why Kane was the one he faced when Rey Mysterio wasn't pinned in the four-way at Bragging Rights)

But Chris Jericho vs The Undertaker was a match many were tossing around as a possibility for WrestleMania 26.  Perhaps WWE had no desire to consider going that route, and instead are planning on Jericho facing a returning Edge, but the problem there is that there is no guarantee Edge will be ready by then.

So now we're getting Chris Jericho and Undertaker, in a three-way match where the build-up will likely be more about Chris Jericho and Big Show being the tag team champions and less about The Undertaker, and it takes a little bit of the luster off of what could have been a unique match for the biggest show of 2010.  Or any future singles match between Chris Jericho and The Undertaker.

Let me pretend WWE does go ahead and still do a Jericho/Taker match at WrestleMania.  And let me try to come up with a way to set that up, even though we'll be seeing the two of them compete this month:

Like I said before, I think (but don't know) that the three-way is going to be built more around Jericho and Big Show than Undertaker.  Not only is the "tag team dissension" the built-in storyline, but it takes a lot of the responsibility for the match off of a hurting Undertaker.  WWE could have Chris Jericho win the title at Survivor Series.  What makes me think there's even a chance of that?  The December PPV is the TLC Tables Ladders and Chairs PPV.  Can Undertaker really perform at the level needed right now to defend the title in a TLC match?  I don't think so.  I have no doubt in my mind that by the time that PPV rolls around, the champion on Smackdown will be either CM Punk or Chris Jericho.  (and if Rey Mysterio wins out against Batista, he's the perfect challenger for either of them at the TLC PPV, unless WWE would give that spot to John Morrison)  So for Jericho to win at Survivor Series and keep things going for a potential singles match against Taker down the line, he would need to pin Big Show to win the title.  That way, Undertaker lost the title to Jericho without losing the match, and you can set up the chase for Undertaker to get Jericho in a singles match to win the title back - perhaps with an Undertaker vs Vince McMahon match as a speedbump on the way - and Jericho continually mocking Undertaker by adding "winning the title against The Undertaker and Big Show in one night" to his glowing list of accomplishments.

But I know a lot of people are assuming things are happening for different reasons.  And I wouldn't doubt WWE has something totally different in mind that what I wrote above.  You have a hurting Undertaker, so you pit him against someone who can work an easier style with him - Big Show.  We've seen that match many times on PPV already though, and it's certainly not something you expect to be a show-stealer.  So you add Chris Jericho to the match.  Adding the "tag team dissension" angle to the match, adding someone who can bump around the ring throughout, and adding someone who can take the pinfall from Undertaker.

Then to get around having Taker in a TLC match, you put the title back on Punk on TV via some type of screwjob.  (which could be what leads to one of those other little rumors - Undertaker vs Vince McMahon at WM26)  I don't remember if there's a 3-hour Raw coming up before the TLC PPV, but if there is, and Taker is still champion - I wouldn't be shocked to see a title change there.  (seriously, if Undertaker defends the title in a TLC match, I will watch Vince Russo promos on a loop for 5 hours straight)

I have no idea how the match will go at Survivor Series, so I couldn't help but think of the worst possible outcome and the best possible outcome in my mind.  What do you all think is going to happen?  And what would you like to see happen, if not the same?

I totally agree they're giving us Jericho and Undertaker too early. I would really like to see it at the next Wrestlemania.

Your idea about having Y2J pin Show though without Taker losing sounds like a good way to work it out tho. I'd like to see that happen.

I don't know how you come up with this stuff but you and steiner both should write more often. It's what I come here for other than playing all the games.  11/1/09 7:06 PM

I'm sorry but how do you see Y2J even winning the title? Big Show is in the match as well. How about have him win the title and then Vince or Teddy declare the title back to Smackdown and have a big tourney for the title going into the Survivor Series PPV, so everyone like Mysterio, Morrison, Punk, Batista, or anybody else to get a shot  11/1/09 8:45 PM

I like the idea of Jericho winning it because I'd like to see him in a TLC match. He's never been in one before as far as I can remember.

Majicman, they've had both the world titles on one brand before. I want to say it wasn't that long ago - wasn't it when CM Punk cashed in MITB to take it off Edge? So I doubt they'd hold the title up. The only time they did something like that was with Lashley moving off ECW. And if Big Show did win the title why would they immediately take it back off of him? That would make me pretty mad if WWE did that.  11/1/09 9:00 PM

Majicman, what is so crazy about Jericho winning the title? He's one of the most decorated stars on either brand.

Big Show could certainly win but like Rhombus said I doubt they'd just take the title right off of him.

If Big Show were to win, I could see it being something perpetrated by Vince McMahon. Vince turning out to have only been on Smackdown to screw Undertaker and screw Teddy Long and the Smackdown brand. I'm not sure what his motivations would be but it could be a fun angle.

If they did that, they could do something that would feel like a unique finish - have Big Show out of the ring (after a big move from Taker), Jericho hits the codebreaker on Taker, but Taker kicks out. Vince runs down the ring, pulls the ref out, brings in a chair. Jericho holds Taker for Vince to smash him, but then after hitting Taker, Vince hits Jericho as well. Then he helps both Big Show and the ref back in the ring. Taker could be closer to Show, but Show would crawl further to pin Jericho - which could lead to a fun promo from Jericho about it, and also keeps Taker from having taken the fall.

Who knows, it's all fun to think about though!  11/1/09 9:06 PM

I do agree that Taker really isn't in the best of shape as far as taking as much punishment that a TLC match would include. I don't really like the idea of Taker losing on a weekly show and I don't know how well WWE or Taker would like that either. The biggest issue is what will happen at Survivor Series. Honestly, if he couldn't compete at TLC, Taker should have dropped the title at Bragging Rights...preferably to someone like Rey or Batista, but Punk would have been okay. Had Rey or Batista taken the title, they could either take Taker on in his rematch clause at Survivor Series or went ahead with their current story line and made it a title match. Rey could take a TLC match much better than Batista or Taker. Maybe the match at TLC could have been Mysterio v. Jericho or Punk or Batista. With Batista being as big as he is, watching him go through a table could be pretty impressive.
The problem I see now is when Taker would want his rematch. Sure he could wait if he loses the title, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense seeing as how most ex-champs want their rematch as soon as the next PPV will allow.

It's anyone's guess. I'm sure something will work out in the end. Whether we all like it or not remains to be seen.  11/1/09 10:08 PM

i think all this is possible but in response to rhombus jericho has been in a tlc match when he was defending his tag titles along with the late great chris benoit against the dudleys kane and the hurricane and another team i cnt remember and all this actually took place on smackdown as the main event  11/1/09 11:17 PM

Alright, I have many things to say about this one. First of all, I think the only way Taker competes in a TLC match is if Taker wants to be in a TLC match. He is the most respected man in the locker room, even by Vince. I don't think WWE would book him in that dangerous of a match 4 months before he puts his streak on the line at Wrestlemania XXVI.

So, we'll assume he doesn't participate in a TLC match. That leaves Big Show or Jericho (assuming the title is defended in a TLC match like it has the past XX PPVs). As much as I would love to see my favorite wrestler, Big Show, on top of a ladder, I don't think it is feasible. This leaves the artist formerly known as Y2J as the champ at the conclusion of Survivor Series.

The next step is the road to TLC. There is an exponentially greater chance of Jericho losing the belt on a weekly show than Taker doing so. But it is still highly unlikely.

At this point, I would have to assume the best matchup for TLC would be Jericho vs Punk, but they are the two top heels on Smackdown barring Batista's heel turn status. So what face could compete in TLC at a high level against these two? In my opinion, there would be no greater way to bring back the Ultimate Opportunist, Edge, as a top face. He departed on a good note with the fans as he jawwed back and forth with Jericho on the Titantron. I wouldn't expect him to win the title, but isn't that when he always does?

Of course, this is only one path the WWE can take. Edge may not be healthy by that point. They may also want to bring him back as a tag team contender to oppose Jerishow. Now how can they get Christian off of ECW?  11/6/09 12:39 PM

Rushing? Jericho and Undertaker have never had a singles feud ever! This has been ten years in the making and until Smackdown recently the two had never had a one on one match...its been a long time coming and in my opinion they waited TOO long  11/22/09 3:42 AM

Jericho was in that tlc but, him and benoit weren't defending the titles. Kane and Hurricane were but Hurricane got hurt and Kane defended the championship by himself. The match was competed on Raw back when they were on Spike TV  11/24/09 5:01 AM
