I have definitely read on various forums that there are a number of people who expect some type of screwjob finish to a big match at WWE's Breaking Point. The PPV is being held in Montreal - and we all know how much WWE loves to keep what is likely Vince's favorite move he's ever made in the business.
The majority of posts I read discussing the possibility have focused on it being during the John Cena vs Randy Orton "I Quit" match. Honestly, if they were doing it during that match, wouldn't it be a rehash of the Mick Foley vs The Rock "I Quit" match where they had played a mash-up of a Foley promo to make it sound like Foley was quitting during the match? So there could definitely be a screwjob finish to the match, but it wouldn't exactly be a "Montreal Screwjob."
What about The Undertaker vs CM Punk in the submission match? This is the one that makes sense to have it, as either man can have the other in a submission (and if they actually bust out the sharpshooter, I wouldn't be surprised) and the ref (or Teddy Long, or even make it more authentic with Vince at ringside) calls for the bell when Taker clearly doesn't tap out.
The reason why I wanted to talk about the possibility is that I actually see some potential value in doing it this time. What's a faction on Smackdown? The Hart Dynasty! If there is someone who perpetrates the screwjob, whether it be Punk (who, to really make it authentic, should deny deny deny), Teddy Long, or Vince McMahon, there could be some money in having the Hart Dynasty be so disgusted by the act that they really go after whoever it may be. I believe the face turn would be simple - I think fans would automatically accept it based on the knowledge of the original screwjob. Looking out for family is something that can endear anyone to the crowd, especially someone as beloved as Bret Hart is. Imagine the Dynasty actually coming out to close Breaking Point - the pop in Montreal would be incredible, and it should carry over to crowds in the US as well.
It would be great if they could somehow find someone to join with the Dynasty that would add a main event feel to the group. It's possible without adding anyone, it could still elevate them to the top, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. I'm drawing a blank on ideas - I think Chris Jericho would work, as he trained in the Dungeon, but he's already tied up. And turning him face isn't something I want to see just yet - though it would solve the problem of how to do the eventual Jericho vs Edge feud.
So then you would have what I think would be a super-over Hart Dynasty on Smackdown, and then a dominant heel group in Legacy on Raw. The groups are similar in that they each come from famous wrestling families (not sure that Tyson Kidd is 2nd generation, but he may be?), so WWE could do an amazing slow slow slow build leading to a clash between the two factions.
And then back to the actual screwjob happening in Taker/Punk at Breaking Point - this keeps Taker strong while not giving him the title and immediately creates new feuds for Punk (though I think it would be great if he denied it completely and finally revealed his involvement a few months later). Dynasty could remain heelish in a way, though with their actions being "honorable", the fans may be happy to support them going after Punk. They wouldn't even have to take the title - they could pull a finish where they win with the sharpshooter, seemingly winning the title, but by refusing to relinquish the hold, they are disqualified. (and if that sounds familiar, it was a finish to a Bret Hart match, though not for a title - I believe against Jerry Lawler at a SummerSlam)
Of course, I seriously doubt any of this happening, and I can't say for sure it would work if they tried.. but it was a fun idea I had and figured I'd share it.

And it's hard to leave off that if they elevated Hart Dynasty in such a way, there could be a really great D-X vs Hart Dynasty feud if D-X would be willing to turn heel! I could see Hart Dynasty playing clips when HBK denied taking part in the original Montreal Screwjob and then the clip of him finally admitting it.. That would be great. Normally I balk at the idea of WWE repeating the screwjob, feels like a tired thing. But the way you present how they could translate it into a once-in-a-lifetime break for a group like Hart Dynasty it's hard to disagree! Bret Hart never really got his revenge on Vince, Shawn, and Hunter for the screwjob. I think and hope he's past it by now, but now with the Hart Dynasty, it's almost like an angle that started almost 12 years ago. It'd be REALLY easy to educate the fans on the story, and talk about the kind of story that may draw in some casual fans a bit more to the product. The fact that we saw D-X teaming with VKM goes along with things, too. And you're also forgetting that Shawn lost to taker at WM - motive for him to want to be involved in screwing Taker out of a title. Then you just have Teddy Long work out an agreement with a guest host on Raw to make a trade, giving the Dynasty to Raw - how about in exchange for Evan Bourne and either Kofi or Miz (have Miz win the title right before Kofi is moved if Kofi gets traded). Then all your possibilities of rivalries between Legacy, D-X, and the Dynasty can come true and could be the real kick in the ass Raw needs. Legacy as the heels, D-X as the tweeners, and Dynasty as the faces. I do agree with you Dynasty should get an upper-tier talent to join them. It'd be great if Lance Storm wanted to take the spot. Introducing him as the new member in Canada would be the best way, so that US audiences could see him incredibly over before he performs live in front of a US crowd. Jericho's the only other choice that could also loosely fit, though they could fabricate a backstory with Christian to make him the top guy, too. man i just finished reading cletus's ideas and then refreshed and saw yours too steiner. wwe should hire the two of you together to brainstorm ideas because all the things ive seen from you two sounded tons better than what wwe ended up doing. although do have to give props to wwe for takers return. that was an amazing moment at summerslam and i think they handled it so great. but your ideas for making hart dynasty automatically added to the raw main event would be 100000x better than the orton cena hhh stuff they've been doing. Well I hope they don't try to do some stupid screwjob but even if they did I reaaaaally doubt they're going to have the Hart Dynasty give any kind of reaction to it. I agree though, what you wrote makes sense to me and I really like moving Evan Bourne to Smackdown. :) Posted on August 29, 2009 at 9:42 PM Season 14 Overall Rank: #463 (Rank in League: #19) |

And Spencer, you forgot to mention when thing about Undertaker getting screwed. Don't forget that Undertaker never submitted in the WWE in his entire career since debuting in 1990. This would be the perfect way, if having CM Punk retain, to have Undertaker lose the Submission Match without submitting. That'd be perfect because it doesn't hurt Undertaker's career with a submission loss for his first time in his career and it will elevate CM Punk by beating Undertaker to retain the title, but also by elevating his career as the top heel on Smackdown, which can also even make him the top heel in all of the WWE if something like this happens. I think that Lance Storm would be the perfect idea to be involved in The Hart Dynasty. If Teddy Hart wasn't released from his developmental deal due to bad conduct, he'd be a great addition to The Hart Dynasty as well. Maybe, just maybe, if they can try and negotiate things with Bret Hart and his neice, Natalya, and his nephew, David Hart Smith, and his niece's boyfriend, Tyson Kidd, can reason with the Hitman himself, that they can bring Bret Hart back to the WWE as their manager and see if they can work out some type of agreement. Doubt it'll happen. But never say never because stranger things have happened before in the past. Posted on August 30, 2009 at 12:31 PM |

You've only mentioned the Raw and SD title matches. You're forgetting about a little bad boy named ECW that just happens to have a Canadian Champion. I'm personally seeing all 3 belts changing hands at this event, and you know WWE never lets a face be the one to submit anymore. If we're gonna see a screwjob angle, I fully expect it to be Regal screwing Christian. Posted on August 30, 2009 at 5:15 PM |
