5 Reasons "The Wrestler" is my Favourite Film Ever Made

I haven’t done a random blog like this in a while so I thought Id get back to doing it.

My favourite film is “The Wrestler” Starring Mickey Rourke. Now a lot of people will probably disagree entirely on my opinion as a lot of people don’t like this film but hear me out.

At first I hated this film, I wasn’t the smartest wrestling fan ever when I first watched it and was defiantly not the Encyclopaedia and dictionary I am now and that did play a part in me not liking this film.

Now I am about to start A Level English and I am an actor who has also directed armature productions and upon watching the film last night I really got to grasp with how amazing this film actually is. Let me talk you through some of the reasons this film is my favourite ever.

1. ROH and CZW: The creators of the film actually used Indy wrestlers for the backstage area and in ring shots. Not only did this make the film more realistic but the fact the film directors let the Indy wrestlers use there REAL ring names this will give the wrestlers more exposure and help them get future bookings on the independent scene.

2. There are guys like “The Ram”: Mick Foley was on “Wrestlecast” in the UK with the Sun a few years ago promoting TNA when the film was brought up and he said at first viewing he didn’t like the film as he thought it put a bad light on the wrestling business then he said on second viewing he realised he did know guys like that and there are guys like that on the Indy scene. Plus R.Truth is in it so it’s quite funny to look back on. Looks like Mrs Foleys Baby Boy, watches the film through the same goggles as myself.

3. The Story: For those who haven’t seen the film, “The Wrestler” is a film about an 80’s wrestler called Randy “The Ram” Robinson. Randy was the “Hulk Hogan” of the 80’s and then pretty much hangs onto the business to the bitter end as Wrestling is all he’s ever wanted to/can do (How many times do we here that). He’s now in 2007 a broke Indy wrestler trying to hang on to his acclaimed fame of the past. I wont ruin the ending here Ill talk about that in the spoilers section.

4. Symbolism and Directing Techniques: The way the cameras move around as if this is an amateur film when there following Randy around really brings to life how rough the life of an indy wrestler can be and really adds depth to the film. As an actor I love pointing out director techniques but don’t worry I wont get into that here. The main symbolism I caught was at the end of the film so once again ill put it in the spoilers.

5. Mickey Rourke: Rourke was perfect in the role and pulled off the run down wrestler to a tee. I’m so glad they gave this role to a real wrestling fan and not some phoney who doesn’t know anything about wrestling (Summer Fest anyone?) And lets face it, Dwayne isn’t really the right person to pull this off.

This film really brings across what people who love this business will do to cling on and really puts a light on the true story of people leaving this business and realising there life isn’t worth living outside of the ring. That’s what there put on this earth to do…

Wrestle. Entertain.

And that’s why I respect every single man and woman who steps between those ropes whether there in WWE or OVW. They love this business, sometimes too much.
