It's the question most asked besides when HBK Shawn Michaels is returning, and returns are my favorite thing to discuss.
So, when should The Undertaker make his return to WWE in 2009?
SummerSlam is right around the corner. In fact it's less than a month after Night of Champions. I've heard reports that HBK will be returning BEFORE Undertaker - which, even though this blog is about Undertaker's return, let's take a quick detour so that the plan I lay out takes that report into account.
Night of Champions is soon, and right now appears to be a pretty solid card. (and that plays a big part in how I think things will shape up for SummerSlam, actually) I don't expect Undertaker to return for Night of Champions, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Shawn Michaels will make a return or at least somehow make his presence felt at the show. Whether it's saving Triple H and/or John Cena from a Legacy attack, or coming out after a Randy Orton win to simply make a challenge known (seriously increasing interest in the next night's Raw!), I think it's time to do it. Sure, they could wait until Raw, but having him appear to close the PPV out will REALLY hype up Raw. Heck, he could come out and just announce he's the guest host for tomorrow night's Raw! Lots of possibilities there.
But regardless, I really think Undertaker is coming back for SummerSlam. Like I said, Night of Champions seems to be a solid show, so they have to pull out all the stops to make SummerSlam seem special not even a month later. Shawn Michaels, while a GREAT way to boost SummerSlam, is not all it will take if you ask me. Undertaker AND Shawn Michaels is the way to do it. It will be the first show since WrestleMania that both men have been on, heck, that either of them has been on. What more of a way to say "THIS IS WRESTLEMANIA OF THE SUMMER!" than that?
What would Undertaker be coming back for, though?
There are a few interesting ways they can go..
1) Build to another Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker match, possibly culminating at the Hell in a Cell PPV. They made the match famous by being opponents in the very first Hell in a Cell match - and what better way to promote the first HIAC PPV? Personally, while I'd love to see them go at it one more time, I think their match history is as perfect as it can get. I think they could add to that history, but they could also take away from it. Instead, having the two of them headline their brand's HIAC matches at that PPV might be a better idea.
2) Have Undertaker challenge CM Punk (or Jeff Hardy) for the world title. Or simply interject him into the mix and make it a three-way feud. How do you have this make sense? CM Punk is judging Jeff Hardy for his past mistakes. Undertaker can say CM Punk has no right to judge.. only Undertaker has that right. And he'll judge both Punk and Hardy. They could turn this into the very first triple threat Hell in a Cell match at the HIAC PPV. Instead of actually having Undertaker in a match at SummerSlam, they could promote an "Undertaker return" at the show - and have that return tie into Punk and Hardy. (since I would expect another Punk/Hardy match after NOC assuming Hardy is sticking around)
3) Move forward with a Chris Jericho/Undertaker feud. Personally I agree with a lot of others here who say they want to see that match at WrestleMania 26 though!
I don't see many other possibilities for Undertaker. They're not going to blow his return in a match with someone who's not already in the main event, I wouldn't think.
And since Cletus has made me one of the new featured blogs, I'm going to start writing more often..
Just don't forget guys to predict TNA's VICTORY ROAD and WWE's NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS! I'm going to give my thoughts on both shows soon.
And I'm going to start playing the 4-UP Fantasy Wrestling game here at 4-Down.
