What if the Original Nexus Reformed Today?
There has been some speculation that Wade Barrett may be returning soon and it got me to thinking - What if the Original Nexus Reformed Today?
The Original Nexus was comprised of the entire roster of NXT season 1 rookies. Each of these men have went in separate directions, but let's take a look at what the Supergroup would look like if it reformed today:
Wade Barrett - the original leader of the Nexus and winner of NXT season 1. Barrett made an immediate impact and had feuds with WWE's biggest stars, John Cena and CM Punk. However, due to injury, Barrett has had a disappointing year in 2012.
David Otunga - Otunga played the part of second-in-command while in the Nexus, a part he would once again play under John Laurinaitis in the People Power era.
Michael Tarver - Tarver was released by WWE last year. At one point, it looked like they had an angle for him, showing him in the background of every backstage segment, but nothing came of it.
Justin Gabriel - Gabriel has been a disappointment since becoming a singles wrestler. Maybe he will reemerge in his new tag team with Tyson Kidd.
Heath Slater - He's the One Man Baaaaaaaaaand Babayyyyyyyyy! Other than that, Heath Slater is only known for being one of the best in the business at taking bumps. Don't get me wrong, that is a respectable trait. Shawn Michaels became one of the best of all time with that particular skill. Slater is rumored to be starting a feud with Santino for the US Championship. Maybe that will turn out better for him than taking on legends.
Darren Young - After Young was excommunicated by the original Nexus, he disappeared for a while. He came back for NXT: Redemption, which lasted FOREVER. By the end of the marathon season, he had formed an alliance with Titus O'Neil. They debuted recently as the Primetime Players in AW's All World Promotions. NXT really helped Young develop and his tag team has shown potential, but we all know how finnicky WWE can be with its tag division.
Ryback - What? Ryback was in Nexus? Oh, yes he was. Actually, back then he was known as Skip Sheffield (yep, yep, yep, what it do). After a terrible injury derailed him for over a year, he has repackaged himself as the Ryback, a one-man wrecking machine.
Daniel Bryan - And who could forget that good ole Daniel Bryan was in the original Nexus? A lot of people, actually, because Bryan's tenure in the group was shortlived. On the first night that Nexus appeared and wreaked havoc on Monday Night Raw, Daniel Bryan choked Justin Roberts with his own tie. This caused Bryan to be immediately fired by WWE. He has done ok since leaving the group. He has won the United States Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship and he is currently in the middle of the WWE Championship picture.
In my opinion, if the Original Nexus reformed today, Daniel Bryan would have to be the leader. It was clear even in NXT season 1 that Bryan was the best wrestler of the bunch, but WWE didn't want to admit that an independant wrestler could be so good. They took their time pushing CM Punk to the top as well, but in time, talent wins out.

Bryan sure seems to be on track to become the most accomplished of the bunch. He's already captured a world title and should stay in the hunt as he has managed to establish a schtick with staying power. Barrett has a tough road ahead since I'm not sure he ever really got over with the fans and has likely been widely forgotten at this point. Ryback is a tough one to call but I think the odds are that he's just the latest monster character and will probably be gone in a couple years (its boom or bust though). I'd actually put Heath Slater 2nd over Barrett/Ryback as his work with the Legends got him a good deal of visibility. I would love to see maybe a 4 man nexus with Barrett, Ryback, Otunga, and Slater. Then with Kevin Nash hinting that maybe a NWO reunion would take place with CM Punk the leader and replacing Hogan. would be an awesome fued altimately leading Barrett Vs. CM Punk for the WWE Championship. Barrett will be World Heavyweight Champion next year by Summerslam if he stays healthy. dare2believe, If I remember right, Barrett's guaranteed championship opportunity was used when they put him in a multi man match for the WWE championship. He did challenge for the title a few times.
