What's Up With That? (Religious Themes in Wrestling)

For several years now we have heard of various former wrestlers becoming born again Christians. I don't have an issue with that whatsover. Some have gone on to begin ministries and bring aid to a hurting world through the teachings of the Bible.

Some active wrestlers accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and are open about doing so. I applaud that because the Bible teaches that we are not to be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. However, I do have a problem with bringing this religiosity into the storylines. That is the reason I'm asking the question this week: "What's Up with That?"

JBL began calling himself a wrestling God several years ago. Then Vince McMahon challenged God to a match at one of the PPV's in an attempt to humiliate Shawn Michaels, who was openly a Christian. I thought this was the low point of the WWE.

Most recently, Ric Flair as been calling himself "god". I take exception to that and said so in a recent blog. If you want to read it just look for it in the menu on this site.

At TNA's Bound For Glory PPV Jeff Hardy turned heel and captured the TNA World championship. I don't have an issue with Hardy's heel turn because that is part of wrestling. Most superstars will turn heel or revert to a baby face at least once in their careers. However, my problem with Jeff Hardy is this: He is referring to himself as the "antichrist" of professional wrestling. What's Up With That?

Flair calls himself god, Hardy is the anitchrist. The only thing missing is a messiah. But wait, several years ago we had a fellow named Judas Messias, which was a play on the messiah theme!

I confess to you the reader, I am religious. I am a born again Christian. I don't flaunt it in my posts nor do I try to persuade others to believe the way I do. I am not ashamed of the fact that I'm a Christian. If you ask me about something related to Christianity, I will do my best to answer you. But I take offense at wrestling companies and wrestlers calling themselves god or anitchrists.

As stated, I'm religious and I respect others right to worship as they so choose. But in my opion that has no place whatsover in the wrestling industry. It's got to go!
