What's Up With That? (WWE ReBranding)
Welcome to another special episode of "What's Up With That?" I'm Dare2believe and today I am troubled over something with the World Wrestling Entertainment also known as the WWE and I'm going to be asking the question you all want to know. So let's get right to it.
I'm going to start out with a partial article I read with a quote from WWE chairman Vince McMahon: "I think every brand has to re-create itself," McMahon said. "I want everyone to look at us in a vastly different way than they have." (LA Times interview)
What does that mean? Well....he wants the wrestlers called Supestars and wants to not be known as a "wrestling" company. "What's Up With That? Mr. McMahon.
Hello! That's what your foundation is. Your company is based upon the wrestling industry. You have had stars such as Bruno Sammartino, Ivan Koloff, Superstar Billy Graham and currently Randy Orton, The Undertaker, and John Cena. All are wrestlers. That's what they do. I don't have an issue with calling them "Superstars." McMahon calls them independent contractors.
While in fact, they are not independent at all, they are under contract to the WWE. If or when they are released they cannot compete "independently" for I believe 90 days. They cannot collect benefits, thus they cannot earn their income in their chosen profession.
Vince McMahon is a businessman. I get that. His company, the WWE is a wrestling promotion that entertains. I get that. I do. They have ventured into the movie industry. I don't have issues with that. They produce DVD's and magazines and books. Not an issue.
My issue is separating yourself from WRESTLING. That is what they are all about. What are they going to do? Start just going from city to city and dancing or singing or entertaining the fans for a couple of hours. I think not! They will set up a WRESTLING ring and WRESTLE using several of their Superstars or WRESTLERS.
You cannot NOT be a WRESTLING company Mr. McMahon. That's what you are. Get your creative team together and have them write better storylines. Let your wrestlers or superstars do their job, selling the moves, the injuries,t he storylines and the fans will come.
I'm not sure how the rest of the wrestling fans feel about this, but in my opinion removing wrestling from a wrestling company is a death bell sounding and could be the cancer that will slowly kill the show. Where will we go from there? TNA? Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff are killing that company over there. ROH? They barely get any TV exposure as it is and most people have never seen them.
I don't like what I'm reading and hearing from the world of professional wrestling.

I completely agree with you dare2believe. This may be the shot that finally takes the WWE down once and for all. The Attitude Era was the biggest high. I think you guys are overreacting here. Just because the word wrestling was removed from the WWE title doesn't mean Raw is going to turn into a Broadway musical. The company is very healthy right now and is getting massive ratings on mondays and fridays. I will say that the decision to ban the word wrestling is foolish and unnecessary, but Vince has done this type of thing countless times. I remember when he banned gloves - silly. I understand the concern but I don't think there's a lot to worry about here. I think they are just gearing toward the film industry a bit more is all. Aside from a few possible absences from time to time due to filming the impact should be very minimal. Also they want to appear to be more than they are for when they go to pitch their network.
